Live cuts from Tuesday's Hip-hop show at Just Be Cause!

Milo - I Almost Cut My Hair Off (For Crosby)

Milo - Sweet Chin Music

Safari Al

Sammus - No Hands

Sapience

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Head on down to Just Be Cause at 1013 W. State St. in Ithaca tonight, Tuesday, August 27th for a night of creative and dynamic hip-hop and Ithaca Underground's final summer show.

Milo (on Hellfire Club, based out of Wisconsin these days) headlines, wielding his latest, a double EP “Things That Happened That Day / Things That Happened That Night”, a beautiful work of progressive hip-hop embracing obtuse, first-person lyrics (see poetry) and spacious, atmospheric beats. A slight departure, but natural progression from his quick-lipped “Milo takes Baths” work from 2012. Milo’s catalogue is personal, academic, glitchy, atmospheric, melodic and full of soul, jazz, indie, and DIY ethics. An answer for anyone who has ever questioned 21st century hip-hop.

TTHTD/TTHTN producer, Riley Lake will bring his own solo, beat-instrumental tunes to the table. Check out his SounCloud here.

Sammus continues to rise, hitting Bandcamp's #1 spot for hip-hop back in July when it initially dropped. If you live in Ithaca and haven't checked her out... do yourself a favor an do so immediately.

Sapience is Ithaca's latest hip-hop edition, spitting fresh, socially conscious rhymes. He'll be joined with a live band with Chris Ploss on the 16s and guitar, Gabe Millman on drums, Ben Mann on Bass, and Aaron Turkle on keys.

See you all at Just Be Cause tonight - 8PM // $5 // ALL AGES

Tuesday, August 20th - 8PM / $5 at Just Be Cause, 1013 W. State St., Ithaca, NY (all ages)

WorldService Project (UK) and Nohaybandatrio (Italy) are in the midst of their "40 gigs, 40 days, 6,000 mile" tour - founded by Davide Cardea and Kathrine Fidorra (Megasound Records).

The fourth edition showcases the wacky punk-jazz of British quintet WorldService Project, and the progressive virtuosic rock of the Italian, Nohaybandatrio.

Locals BRIAN! will kick things off with a rare duo performance featuring four new pieces composed for bassoon, guitar, and voice. Elements of prog, math-rock, drone, and even cantor music come into play this time around.

why+the+wires headline, also showcasing new material and their tough to pin down mix of progressively angular, post-punk.

In an effort to spark new bands and encourage new talent to emerge and mingle, Ithaca Underground is hosting their first ever Open Mic night on Friday, September 6th at Just Be Cause (1013 W. State St., Ithaca, NY 14850).

10 slots are available and sign up starts at 7:30PM at Just Be Cause. First band kicks off at 8PM sharp.

A few notes for attendees and would-be performers:
- No cover, but $2-$5 donations are encouraged.
- Performances will last a maximum of 10 minutes each.
- Local performers only: the majority of band members must reside in the Ithaca metropolitan area (not Syracuse, Binghamton, Cortland, etc).
- Any band signing up must not have already performed or be scheduled to perform at an Ithaca Underground event.
- The band/performer is looking to actively play out in Ithaca (no one-offs).

As Ithaca Underground exists to foster creative, unique, and boundary-pushing music, they are looking for acts to fall somewhere the spectrum of noise, hardcore, punk, grind, sludge, folk-punk, avant garde, solo experimental, math-rock, prog, drone, post-rock, live electronics, hip-hop, and other genre bending mutant forms of music.

At this time, applications from acts falling in the range of traditional singer-songwriter, traditional folk, jam band, blues, "rock", indie pop, funk, and other such genres will not be accepted.

For more information visit the Facebook event or IthacaUnderground.com.

It's that time of year again for Bubba's birthday show. This year is packed with three stellar acts from the road - Toronto's instrumental math-rock heroes, The Bulletproof Tiger return for the second year in a row, Buffalo's two-piece math-rock wizards, All of them Witches are back for just their second Ithaca appearance ever, and our Albany brothers in Grady Stiles (intense, emotional, complex hardcore?)... plus Mouth To Mouth To Mouth make a special appearance with Gulab of Cattle Drums on guitar. Time to get wild down at Just Be Cause (1013 W. State St., Ithaca, NY 14850 | 8PM | $5).

6/14 UPDATE: The ribbon cutting has been postponed. A new date will be announced soon.

Ithaca Underground is very pleased to share this press release on the new Just Be Cause Center for not-for-profit organizations as starting late summer 2013, we will be holding many of our shows at this new location. Details below!

Just Be Cause Center Ribbon-Cutting and Open House

ITHACA, NY – The Just Be Cause Not for Profit Development Center (JBCC) will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on June 20 from 3 to 5 pm. The public is invited to the ceremony and to tour the new center.

The JBCC, located at 1013 W. State Street in the old Ithaca Paint Company building, will fulfill some of the functions lost when the Women’s Community Building closed. It has five office spaces, a conference room, and two multi-purpose activity rooms for use by local non-profits.

“The building is dedicated to Judy Dietz, to honor the spirit of how she lived her life: caring for other people and always working to make sure the community is a better place to be,” said Jerry Dietz of his late wife. JBCC will be owned by the newly formed Just Be Cause Foundation and will be managed by Dietz’s company, C.S.P. Management, LLC.

The extensive renovation of the approximately 5,100 square foot building included new bathrooms, air conditioning, heating, carpeting, kitchen, WIFI and  shared office equipment. “We wanted it to be a really nice space to work in” said Dietz.

The rental for the offices will be well below market rate, in order to allow non-profits previously unable to afford dedicated office space to do so. Other community organizations will also be able to book time in the conference and activity rooms.

The goal, says Dietz, “is for the Just Be Cause Center to allow organizations to come together and draw energy from each other and operate more effectively because of that synergy.”

Ithaca youth hardcore punk trio King Sized Pegasus (great name!!) have their first studio effort streaming now for free/pay-what-you-want on bandcamp.

Meek is Murder returns to Ithaca to headline with their technically brutal, metallic hardcore and mathematical cacophony.

One of 2012's most awe-inspiring events returns to CSMA with the ever-growing NAKED NOISE improv drone ensemble on Friday, April 4th at 9PM.

Join us once again as we transform the CSMA Auditorium into an ethereal sound garden, with a massive 22 musician, amplified ensemble of ritual drone with visuals.

This is far more than just a show - more of a total transcendental sound experience. The performers will be set up in a ring, where the audience is encouraged to wander around the circle of musicians and experience the performance from a variety of angles. The sound will stretch and mutate based on which performers you're closest to.

The performance will be entirely improvised with each musician dedicated to the ebb and flow of chaos and restraint.

NAKED NOISE will once again be curated by Sun Spells (Jeff, Heather, Judd, Aydin, and Owen) and include members of TZAR (Brian Wilson, Michael Stark), LOFTS (Bruce Hyde), Time/Being (John & Mario), Soft Healer (Will & Marie), Hiroshima Vacation (VII Caso), BRIAN! (Bubba), The Invisible Hand (Devin Conathan), You, Me, and the Radio (Katie McShane, Damien Scalise, Luara Karlson-Carp), The Sutras (AJ Strauss), Electric Golem (Trevor Pinch), plus Matthew Saccuccimorano (Black Castle, Sound Awake, etc.), and Michael Troutman, with visuals by Nils Hoover (Newman Brothers).
