The Haunt, 702 Willow Ave, Ithaca, NY 14850 - Sunday, April 21st 6PM 

After four years, Ithaca gets its wish!  This Sunday, December 21st, 2012 at The Haunt, BEHOLD... THE ARCTOPUS will perform their only show outside of Brooklyn this year and their first upstate NY show since 2008.

The technical instrumental trio from Brooklyn play music inspired by both metal and 20th century classical with emphasis on dissonance, polyrhythms, and jazz-like elements.

Founded by Colin Marston (Krallice, Dysrhythmia, Gorguts) and Mike Lerner in 2001 and quickly became known as one of the most forward thinking and technical bands in the underground extreme metal community, being mentioned in the same breath as Cynic, Gorguts, Meshuggah, Voivod, and touring with the likes of Between The Buried and Me, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Genghis Tron.

In 2009, the legendary Weasel Walter, composer and multi-instrumentalist most well-known for his work with The Flying Luttenbachers and the ugExplode imprint, joined BTA after original drummer Charles Zeleny left he group.

Behold... The Arctopus are perhaps most well-known for Colin Marston's use of a 12-string Warr guitar - a 12 string instrument played primarily by tapping that covers the range of guitar and bass.

THESE MACHINES return to Ithaca for their official CD release of "Pharmakon" and to kick of the IU 2012 year!  These Binghamton pals have created some seriously menacing tech-metal with influences all over the grind, death, and hardcore spectrum while creating a hell of a lot of noise for just a trio.  Dual vocal attack from guitarist Tom Doud (also of Sepsis, Dirty Slits, formerly Cancerface) and bassist Paul Ghilardi who get their shred on without any hint of wankness and rounded out with sick kit work via Mike Emm.  Check out footage below from their gig at CSMA with Hiroshima Vacation, et al. from the fall.



Also on the bill are Rochester’s BURN EVERYTHING who, we’ve been itching to play Ithaca as far back as ’09 if memory serves.  This band is crafting some eye-opening, relentlessly scathing melding of metal in hardcore that's all twisted and mangled.  Recently, BE have been getting some national attention from a variety of online hotspots including Metal Sucks:

" Progressive post-hardcore? Dillinger / Burnt By the Sun-esque mathcore? Some other ultimately meaningless label? Beats me… how about just “good”? Burn Everything even introduce elements like elephants marching riffs, Morbid Angel pick scrapes and relentless double-bass pounding you don’t normally hear from bands that fall on the more hardcore side of the spectrum. A true melding of hardcore and metal that isn’t — gasp — “metalcore.” These guys get my vote for sure."

Releases: There are no current releases from PAD.  We have a 3 song demo that's waiting to be mastered. Mid-August we should have it to throw at people. We're hoping to press it on a 7" or a split LP with other artists eventually.

Tell us about yourselves!
Paralysis at Dawn is music and sounds that are distinct, and represent our energy and vision. We don't really have any anchors when it comes to songwriting or styles of music.  Though Ritchie and Dana have established an unique technical, trash like metal over these past ten years that serves as the basis for most of our work,  the addition of David and the direction of our jams have us not knowing what material will end up being arranged.  "Technically sound ambient metal" is probably the easiest way to describe what we do (thanks Bubba). Our band takes influences from a variety of sounds and we try to incorporate those various influences into every song we write. I think we're striving for a sound all our own and so far we're doing a pretty good job with it.  Matched Cut, War Dove, and 30 Watts Short are bands that we've previously played in.  Dana also is an acoustic folk style songwriter.

Our first show at the haunt with our friends Baylor's Eye had us pumped due the the great response we received. We have the writing process on hold over the summer, but we are very much stoked to put some new material together.   We're anticipating performing IU shows, as well as at the 77 Club in Cortland.
We are looking to expand our sound through different instrumentation, and having friends supplement our sound with vocals, noise, live energy or anything else really...  but we'll see what happens. Definite plans are Playing for the love of playing and coming up with more "_______ @ Dawn" t shirt ideas.

So, you're a DIY metal band trying to create music that challenges you and is an expression of yourself, while trying to put your art in front of those who will actually enjoy it, on top of trying to fund releasing said material and keep the band on the road.  Suddenly, after a bit of a whim, your being flown out to record your follow-up EP, surrounded by PR reps, engineers, and producers and suddenly positive attention is being thrust upon the art you love on a national level, virtually overnight. Sound like a band's day dreams?  This is basically what happened to Minnesota metalers, Iron Thrones who, after pushing their we'll received and self released "Visions of Light" CD, worthily won Scion's "No Label Needed" contest. The band recently released their latest EP "The Wretched Sun" as part of winning the contest. Now, they're on tour with recent Relapse Records signees, Hero Destroyed.  The two will appear Sunday, Nov 14th at The Haunt with Engineer and Thirteen South. Ithaca Underground's Bubba Crumrine syncs up with Steve to get the skinny on what winning the contest meant, the new album, and the ashes the band rose from.

IU: What was the process of you guys winning the "No Label Needed" contest from Scion?

Steve: We originally heard about the contest through metalsucks.net, although we didn’t really look into it too hard until a few of our industry-savvy friends mentioned it to us and said it was pretty legit.  I went ahead and uploaded our longest song, “Cover of Smoke” from our first album "Visions of Light", because we all really dug that song and figured if we were going to submit our music for a contest like this, we wanted to win because of a song we really liked, regardless of length or supposed marketability.  Apparently it was a good choice!  From what we heard, the majority of the people involved in the contest really dug the tune, and were happy we won.  Obviously, we were as well!

IU: Was it a strange transition moving from doing everything yourselves to a full PR campaign, radio promo, new web layouts, merch, etc.?

Steve: It certainly took some getting used to.  We like to keep complete control over everything we do so, having teams of people working on PR, promotions, design, and everything else was really strange.  We didn’t really know what to do with ourselves.  It definitely opened up a lot of doors for us, and confirmed what so many have often said about the music business: it’s all about who you know.

IU: What do you feel was the beneficial aspect of winning the contest for the long term?
