In an effort to spark new bands and encourage new talent to emerge and mingle, Ithaca Underground is hosting their first ever Open Mic night on Friday, September 6th at Just Be Cause (1013 W. State St., Ithaca, NY 14850).

10 slots are available and sign up starts at 7:30PM at Just Be Cause. First band kicks off at 8PM sharp.

A few notes for attendees and would-be performers:
- No cover, but $2-$5 donations are encouraged.
- Performances will last a maximum of 10 minutes each.
- Local performers only: the majority of band members must reside in the Ithaca metropolitan area (not Syracuse, Binghamton, Cortland, etc).
- Any band signing up must not have already performed or be scheduled to perform at an Ithaca Underground event.
- The band/performer is looking to actively play out in Ithaca (no one-offs).

As Ithaca Underground exists to foster creative, unique, and boundary-pushing music, they are looking for acts to fall somewhere the spectrum of noise, hardcore, punk, grind, sludge, folk-punk, avant garde, solo experimental, math-rock, prog, drone, post-rock, live electronics, hip-hop, and other genre bending mutant forms of music.

At this time, applications from acts falling in the range of traditional singer-songwriter, traditional folk, jam band, blues, "rock", indie pop, funk, and other such genres will not be accepted.

Tell us about yourselves!
J: Pete and I talked about starting a fast punk band at an Energy show in Autumn 2009, but it would be nearly a year until it finally happened, and almost two years until we played a show. My biggest influences are AFI, The Nerve Agents, Ceremony, and Some Girls. I am planning on getting our demo pressed on cassette, but no one else knows about that. My dream is for us to open at an Insanity Defense reunion show. It’s all about the wordplay.

Pete: Ever since high school, I wanted to start a “fast, but weird” punk band. I didn’t find the right people to do it with until after I graduated college.I got a group of my friends together, and everything clicked.  J, Keri, and Tony are all insanely talented and the nicest people. I’m so lucky that I get to be in a band with them! The music I contribute in this band is probably most influenced by Fugazi, AFI, Public Enemy, At The Drive-In, Minor Threat, Refused, and Rites of Spring. I personally have no ambition for this band being successful, I just love creating music and playing shows with my friends. But I guess the “purpose” of the band (as me and J see it, at least) is to make punk that’s different from what’s going on in the Long Island scene, particularly the hardcore scene. There’s a lot of generic tough-guy hardcore out there that is made primarily for the “shirtless muscular dudes in gym shorts” demographic. I don’t think a lot of bands are trying hard enough to create something new. I don’t know if we’re really successful at doing that or not, but that’s kind of our goal. Plans are: put out another EP by the end of the year, play plenty of shows, have fun, try hard, but don’t take it too seriously. (Sorry for rambling on so much.)

TonyA: I have been playing drums since the 3rd grade, and I never turned back. Being an avid member of the local Cornell University Drumline, it is no wonder that I stress keeping time so strictly when I play with StageFright too. Punk, in particular StageFright, has really pushed my limits. The Long Island punk scene is a unique, ever-evolving scene that I have been a part of since 2005 in some shape or form (when not busy with Ithacation, of course). Each band has been a rewarding experience, but StageFright has brought me to new heights I never thought possible. Thanks to Pete, J, and Keri for having so much confidence in my playing. You guys make the rush of playing feel that much more sweet. (Ramble on!)

Keri: I started playing bass shortly before joining StageFright. I played guitar in a previous band with Pete and am very happy to be playing with him again, as well as J and Anthony. I have a lot of fun playing in this band. I hope we can play out more in the future and am looking forward to recording our next EP.

Hey, this is Devin from the Yeomen. We formed last winter as a Tom Waits cover band. We learned a song or two of his but moved pretty quickly over to my originals. Many of our songs started as my bedroom recordings, but the full band has helped bring these songs from whispered and restrained bedroom folk to sweaty loud rock songs. We pride ourselves on our genre jumping, playing everything from folk-punk to garage, shoegaze, noise, punk, stoner metal and whatever the hell else we have a good time playing. We got off the ground playing in a friend’s garage, often in the freezing cold, the brutal heat, and generally at the ire of the neighbors (and once while a skinned raccoon was being bled onto a piece of cardboard). The other guys in the band are involved with other groups or solo projects, Julian and Pat both play in local mainstays Zgress (http://www.zgress.com/) and Kin Ship (http://kinship.bandcamp.com/).  Julian also plays in a band back home in Providence RI (http://www.myspace.com/vejaduri). Dylan and James are involved in a local trip-hop project and James also creates noise compositions. Dylan is also involved with a noise rock group out of Brooklyn.

Band Name: Cloud Rat. Madison's father once told her that seagulls were rats in the clouds. So that's where that came from, not the actual cloud rat native to the Philippines.

Location: We are all natives from the Mount Pleasant area of Michigan, but Madison now lives in Detroit.

Tell us about yourselves!
Cloud Rat formed in the cold winter of 2009. Adrian and I had been friends for a long time, and have played in bands together years before. Adrian and Madison have known each other for years as well, and were living together when we formed as a band. I went to a show at their house, and I could hear Madison screaming over the band! So that night we all talked about starting a band so that we could contribute a track to our friend Kevin's Michigan Grindcore compilation he was putting together (which never happened). After forming, we wrote and recorded our Self Titled LP within a month, and then it was put out 5 months later by our friends at IFB Records in Florida. We are forever grateful to them for everything they have done for us.

I would describe our sound as grindcore rooted in punk, with a lot of hardcore punk, black metal, screamo, and grunge influences creeping in. We do our best to promote veganism, radical feminism, anti racism/sexism/homophobia/classism/bullshit. The purpose of this band is a mixture of personal catharsis, promoting kindness and equality, and to have fun as well.

We have toured most of the USA and have plans to do a lot more within the next couple years. Currently we are recording for three different records and are looking to head overseas soon-ish.
We look forward to coming to Ithaca!!!!!!

Our good friends Summer People will be releasing their latest full length Teamwork on vinyl this Friday, March 2nd at Spool Mfg in Binghamton, NY.

The group released Teamwork on CD in 2011 to fan acclaim and hit the road with Hotchacha, Zlam Dunk and more to support. Thanks to a wildly successful Kickstarter, the band was able to raise the funds to release the LP on their own Low Light records.

Summer People have performed on several Ithaca Underground events, including last December's BIG DAY IN with Parts & Labor and Algernon Cadwallader, supporting Marnie Stern, Tera Melos, as well as headlining.

That's right, MTMTM are laying down the new material this month for their as-yet-untitled follow up EP. Drummer Gabe Millman is running the boards this time around. It's been 11 months since SIRS graced Ithaca with their presence and we're ultra ready for another dose. Since then, they've put some more miles under their belts, made their Topshelf Records debut - another split, this time in collaboration with the UK's run, WALK! and their mates, Holy Roar Records - and have even more new material in the works.  They guys are in good spirits and amped for Big Day In. Below, Ithaca Underground's Bubba Crumrine catches up with Justin, Kyle, Mike and Hart - who is no stranger to this day-fest, having performed last December in Zona Mexicana.



IU: How has the band been since we saw you guys back in January?

Justin: Pretty great actually. January was when we really started to figure out how we wanted to sound.  When our first guitarist left to form another band, Mike joined pretty much the next day, and as soon as that happened we started to write songs that we really liked and we haven't stopped since.  Mike's a team player and an all around swell guy.

IU: Have you been hitting the road a lot?

Justin: We try to tour whenever we get the chance. This past summer we did a 20 something day tour around the eastern half of the U.S. but, our unreliable van (RIP Gladys) made the trip pretty nerve wracking.  Before that we did a couple shorter tours last summer and winter.  We've got some ideas for this winter and hopefully the summer, but we really have our sights set on next fall when we can hit up some other colleges besides our own.

IU: How did SIRS come to be?

Another trio's first time in Ithaca! This time is the blown out noise-rock of SHOPPERS. It's members are heavily involved in the DIY community in Syracuse - from music to records, shows, and more - and put their punk ethics on the road regularly. Other than that, we'll let their music and words speak for themselves. We've heard fantastic things about their live show from many reliable sources so, come out early and don't miss their 2:30 set at BIG DAY IN this Saturday at The Haunt.  Anyone wanna grab Meredith a vegan slice from Pizza Aroma?



IU: When and how did the three of you come together as Shoppers?

Meredith: Josh and Kari had been best friends for years when I moved to Syracuse.  When Josh and I started dating, Kari and I naturally became friends and decided to start a band together, without Josh. We looked around for a different drummer because Josh was already in bands, but eventually we gave in and started playing as a family.


IU: Tell us about your latest LP, "Silver Year" and the processes you went through:

Meredith: That's kind of like, 'You just had a baby, tell us about the processes you went through'-- I can't possibly know everything that happened, I can't describe the celestial things that went on inside of me, but I can tell you that I got fucked, walked around with it inside me for about nine months, and eventually forced it out.

Josh:  We all went down to Miami on tour and recorded a long play record released on Drugged Conscience and Feeble Minds' collective dime.  Kari did like four bass track overdubs and I was a one-take dynamo in the studio (our friend Brian's parent's guest room).  Then Meredith recorded a half hour of noise to drown out any potential fuck-ups.


IU: Any highlights from your fall tour?

We've got a slathering of trio's making their first appearance in Ithaca this Saturday, including our headliners Algernon Cadwallader - a group of pals creating complex, melodic music. Their full-length Some Kind of Cadwallader stole the hearts of punk, math-rock, and hardcore fans alike. With their latest, Parrot Flies - a more polished effort while still retaining the realness that is Algernon Cadwallader - and subsequent intercontinental tour, these three friends aim to keep turning heads around the globe. Don't worry about pronouncing their name, just make sure you don't miss their headlining set at BIG DAY IN. Ithaca Undergound's Bubba Crumrine gets the skinny from Peter and Joe.


IU: For the uninitiated, how did you three meet and start making music together?

Peter: We met in the suburbs of Philadelphia when we were high school-aged.  Joe and I had a band that would play with Tank's band.  When our original drummer left to go to school, Tank was our first choice and we eventually coaxed him into it.  We lived happily ever after.

IU:What are some moments you most enjoyed creating "Parrot Flies"?

Peter: Recording in an empty church for a week was pretty amazing.  I still can't believe we pulled that one off.  Also, exploring the sounds of different amp and mic combinations - that's fun for us.

IU: The record is quite a bit denser and more layered than its predecessors, was this a concious effort to move in this direction or just a natural progression of having more time and different resources?

It's that time of year again! Time for another 10 hours of awesome music down at The Haunt with Ithaca Underground. We're extremely honored to be hosting Parts & Labor on this our fifth Big Day In event (our third winter version).  Why are we so smitten to have this band in particular?  We'll beyond them being one of the best bands to merge noise, punk, and pop mentalities, after what will be a 10 year run, this Ithaca performance is their final outside of Brooklyn before their pending infinite hiatus.  Ithaca Underground's Bubba Crumrine catches up with founding members BJ Warshaw and Dan Friel - both of whom have performed their own solo acts in Ithaca previously - regarding their latest LP "Constant Future", the possible end of Parts & Labor, and what's next.

IU: First off, I must say we're utterly enthralled with the idea of Parts & Labor's long-anticipated debut in Ithaca.  Sadly, it sounds as though it may be our last. Could you give us and our readers some insight on the cause for hanging the project up for now and what you'll all be focusing on in the meantime?

BJ: We're very excited to finally be playing Ithaca, at long last!

There's not one, central reason for the impending hiatus.  We each have a lot of personal things, families and occupations, that have begun to take up more of our time.  That and our geographical separation has made frequent collaboration and touring increasingly tricky (Joe still lives in Milwaukee, Dan lives in Brooklyn, and I
live in New Jersey).  But mainly we felt ending strongly with a celebration, after 10 years of touring and making records, made a lot of sense.  There's really no discord between us.

We've all got other musical endeavors you'll be hearing from.  I'll be working on Shooting Spires.  Dan's working on a new solo record.  Joe continues to make music for film/TV through his company Noisola.

IU: Glad we'll still have those things to look forward to.  As Parts & Labor, you guys have had a great run of LPs, EPs, tours, collaborations, and collaborators making fantastic noise -  what are some of your favorite highlights?
